JDK 21 Goes Crypto Native on Apple Silicon: 4X Faster IntegrityChecker, 2X Speed of Intel

OpenJDK 21 should be final release in September 2023, but the last “early access” build is pretty much final, so I downloaded it, wondering whether SHA512 hashing might have gone native, since IntegrityChecker Java relies on it. At about 750MB/sec on Intel, it so far had been a disappointing ~350MB/sec on Apple Silicon.

JDK 21ea (early access) is solid—no issues.

Performance earthquake...

With OpenJK 21, hashing speed is now 4X faster and Apple Silicon trounces Intel, at about twice the speed!

The Apple M2 Ultra 24-core CPU* in the 2023 Mac Pro M2 Ultra and Mac Studio runs twice as fast as the Intel 28-core CPU in the 2019 Mac Pro. Dang!

M2 Ultra CPU has 16 performance cores and 8 efficiency cores.

A crazy-fast SSD like the OWC Accelsior 8M2 could in theory deliver about 28GB/sec in the Mac Pro M2 Ultra, but there is significant CPU overhead just for the disk I/O itself, which will reduce that somewhat, perhaps top ~24 GB/sec.
