RAID-0 Performance with SoftRAID 5

Last updated 2014-06-08 - Send Feedback
Related: Storage, Video, RAID, Thunderbolt

RAID 0 maximizes performance with no fault tolerance. Performance should scale in line linearly with the number of drives up to the point where the bus bandwidth saturates.

Tested with very fast hard drives.

Performance of RAID 0 with 4 drives, single and dual Thundebolt enclosures

Performance is outstanding.

Observe that the use of dual OWC Thunderbay units (two drives each unit) with two Thunderbolt cables slightly improves performance, particularly for smaller transfers. This might have to do with burst transfer speed on the Thunderbolt v1 bus.

Tested with DiskTester on the late 2013 MacBook Pro in dual OWC Thunderbay enclosures, each on its own Thunderbolt port. SoftRAID 5 beta.
