Miscellaneous Mac Headaches

Last updated August 25, 2009 - Send Feedback

This page captures various annoying things that have no obvious fix or are just a headache, and generally worth griping about.

If you have a fix or solution, please let us know.

More will be added as time allows: Macs are great, but far from perfect.

The Green Crawlies

This plague of locusts has been around for years. It’s back on my Apple 30" display on the Mac Pro Nehalem. It comes and goes with no apparent rhyme or reason.

Adobe licensing headaches

It’s bad enough to have the Adobe licensing scheme hassling me when I switch machines or boot drives, etc. But Adobe’s software has a nasty bug that fills up system log files too!

Launch any CS4 application: Adobe’s FLEXNet software (FNPLicensingServ) crashes constantly (SIGSEGV means a bad memory access eg "unix OS signal indicating segmentation violation"), filling up my system log files with garbage. There is also a thread on this here.

It’s also infuriating that Adobe’s copy protection runs as root, a risky thing from a security perspective. It’s only to your detriment any way you look at it, a classic case of putting customer interests last.

The fix is found on Adobe’s site, and is slightly technical to run, but not too hard. If you stil have trouble, the command (in Terminal) to kill this headach program is sudo killall FNPLicensingService.
