TESTED: Incredibly Fast OWC Atlas CFExpress Type B Cards in OWC Atlas FXR Card Reader, Encrypted or Not
re: Camera Cards for Wallet Backups
re: How to Create an Encrypted Volume on an SSD or Camera Card
Faster than any USB-C SSD, and not by a little. The OWC Atlas FXR card reader along with OWC Atlas Ultra or OWC Atlas Pro CFExpress Type B cards rock.
Performance with APFS encrypted file system eg wallet backups was interesting to me.
As well as how the OWC Atlas FXR and OWC Atlas Dual CFexpress + SD Card card readers differ between each other and with different card readers.
OWC Atlas camera cards and card readers are designed for still photography and video capture. No one encrypts a camera card for such purposes (nor would the camera be able to use the card!), but if the goal is wallet backup, then encryption comes into play.
Recommended camera cards and readers: OWC Atlas FXR, OWC Atlas Dual CFexpress + SD Card Card Reader, OWC Atlas Pro, OWC Atlas Ultra
and Good choices:
Speed using OWC Atlas FXR Thunderbolt card reader
The OWC Atlas FXR card reader for CFExpress Type B cards is incredibly fast, hitting over 1600 MB/sec. By comparison, the fastest a USB-C SSD (non-Thunderbolt) can do is a sluggish ~1000MB/sec.
Formatting as APFS encrypted for a secure wallet backup hardly affects performance at all, vs no encryption—nice!
While the OWC Atlas Ultra card is indeed the ultimate in performance, the OWC Atlas Pro card is no slouch, and reads are just as fast, at a whopping ~1600 MB/sec.

Speed with OWC Atlas Dual CFExpress B/SDXC Card Reader
The OWC Atlas Dual CFExpress B/SDXC Card Reader is a USB-C card reader with a CFExpress Type B slot and an SDXC slot. USB-C limits maximum speed to about 1050 MB/sec.
The advantage of the dual reader is one unit that can ingest both SDXC and CFExpress Type B cards, and it costs a lot less than the OWC Atlas FXR card reader.
The USB-C protocol is poorly suited to high performance cards such as CFExpress, which can be accessed through the PCIe protocol as when using the OWC Atlas FXR card reader, as above.
For CFExpress Type B cards, the smart move is the OWC Atlas FXR ingestion speed as well as for AFPS encrypted wallet backups.
