New Apple 27" iMac
Thank you for clicking through my Apple Store button to buy your iMac.
The new 27" iMac can now be ordered at the Apple Store. I hope to have a test machine when it actually ships in 2-3 weeks.
Below is the configuration I recommend. In general:
- The CPU cannot be upgraded, so for 9% more money, a 6% faster CPU is reasonable. But hardly noticeable on clock speed, so not very important in general. Still, the Intel Core i7 might in some circumstances offer a little more boost beyond the clock speed than the Intel Core i5.
- 32GB at Apple is absurdly expensive. Get 32GB at OWC for about $189 (wait to order until the new model ships so OWC can qualify the right modules).
- Since the hard drive is not easily upgradeable, the 3TB option is advised. Note that Larger Hard Drives Are Faster Than Smaller Ones as they fill up.
- For most users, the “faster” graphics do nothing useful. Hype mainly. For me, they do nothing, and I use Photoshop and other photo programs heavily. I disable OpenGL for my work (OpenGL needed to use the GPU). Gamers, serious video processing, etc all can use a faster GPU.
