2019 Mac Pro: Convert RAW Files to JPEG With Adobe Camera Raw (Fujifilm GFX)

MPG tested the $9399 Apple 2019 Mac Pro with 384GB OWC memory vs the top-end $3849 2019 iMac 5K 3.6 GHz Intel Core i9 8-core / Vega 48 with 128GB OWC memory. The memory difference is not a factor in this test.

The support of OWC / MacSales.com and B&H Photo is essential for making these reviews possible.

2019 Mac Pro

This test is a real-world task relevant to Adobe Photoshop: batch convert raw files to JPEG. Disk I/O is not a significant factor for any of these machines.

Results: Raw file conversion to JPEG — Fujifilm GFX raw

This test looks at both 50-megapixel Fujifilm GFX-50S raw files and 100-megapixel Fujifilm GFX100 raw files.

See the in-depth review of Fujifilm GFX100 and Fujifilm GFX-50S in diglloyd Medium Format.

The 2019 iMac 5K takes twice as long as the 2019 Mac Pro.

The 2019 Mac Pro has 16 cores at 3.2 Ghz versus 8 cores at 3.6 GHz for the 2019 iMac 5K, yielding an expected differntial of (16 X 3.2) / (8 X 3.6) = 1.78X clock cycles ratio. And yet the Mac Pro does substantially better than that, which means some other ingredients are at play. Scalability be near perfect for starters, but it seems likely that the 3.6X greater memory bandwidth of the Mac Pro comes to bear on slowing down the iMac 5K.
