A big thanks to Other World Computing for loaning MPG the upgraded 2013 Mac Pro! Ditto for B&H Photo for loaning the 6-core Mac Pro. 64GB memory kit for 2013 Mac Pro provided by OWC.

Introduction

Assembling large stitched panoramic images benefits from ample memory and more CPU cores.

Results

See the test machine configurations.

Threads in PTGuiPro were set to the number of real hardware CPU cores, e.g., 6/8/12. 16-bit images were used.

The 2013 6-core Mac Pro outperforms the 2010 12-core handily, with the 8-core 2013 Mac Pro reducing the time further by about 15%.

The blending and saving phases do not use CPU cores well, and this explains why the 12 core 2013 Mac Pro is scarcely any faster than the 6 core Mac Pro.
