Many operations require transfer sizes far smaller than those needed for peak SSD speed. This test looks at how the SSD performs for sizes from 32K to 512MB.
Results: SSD Speed vs Transfer Size
Tested with the run-sequential-suite command of diglloydTools DiskTester.
Compared to the 2TB SSD in the 2019 iMac 5K, the 8TB 2019 MacBook Pro SSD shows much slower performance in the critical 32K to 256K range for reads.
While the 2019 MacBook Pro offers substantially faster write performance for writes 256K and larger, such operations are much less important (infrequent) compared to read operations, so the iMac 5K is the clear winner for everyday operations, where reads predominate.
These are real world figures through the OS X file system APIs, and thus reflect the performance available to applications.
