MPG tested a fully-loaded Apple 2018 MacBook Pro 15-inch 2.9 GHz 32GB 2TB Radeon Pro 560X. The only better model is the same configuration with a 4TB SSD.

This test is as real world as it gets, one that Lloyd does frequently for generating lens rendering aperture series. This particular job applies to much of Lloyd’s work, such as for this lens comparison. It is a time-consuming and work-stopping task, so performance gains are very welcome. That said, it is one specific workflow that might have limited significance for the workflow of others. Still, if workflow is scripted, it likely applies.
Photoshop does not use CPU cores well for this test, though it is not entirely single threaded. It is a javascript-driven script that generates series of images.
The 2017 iMac 5K wins out as might be expected—while the 2017 iMac 5K has only 4 CPU cores as compare to 6 CPU cores for the 2018 MacBook Pro, its cores run at 4.2 GHz base clock. Since this test uses at most two CPU cores, the 6 cores of the 2018 MacBook Pro have little relevance.
