How to Fix Pesky Problem of No Access to Your Own Volumes at the Top Level

re: IntegrityChecker Java

Hook up another drive, and macOS tells you that you do not have permission to make changes to it at the top level, something as simple as creating a new folder or copying files there. Crazy stuff, but that’s macOS.

Not just that, but programs like IntegrityChecker Java will be denied permission to write or update its hash info at the top level (icj issues a warning but that’s all it can do).

Fixing top-level permissions on volumes/drives

First, make sure that Finder => Settings has Show these items on the desktop has Hard disks checked. (Don’t ask me why flash drives and SSD’s are still “hard disks”... WTH).

  1. Do Get Info on the volume icon.
  2. Click the lock icon at lower right and unlock things.
  3. Click the "+" icon to add a new permission.
  4. Add yourself with read/write permission.
  5. Close the window.
