How to save about $360 on a 20TB OWC Thunderbay 4

Here’s a way to build a 20TB OWC Thunderbay 4 with a configuration MPG uses every day (20TB solution highly recommended for photo and video pros):

UPDATE May 22nd: the B&H deal is over, and OWC pricing on Toshiba 5TB now has dropped aggressively.

  1. Order an OWC Thunderbay 4 with no drives (or RAID-5 edition with no drives).
  2. Order four 5TB Toshiba drives at B&H Photo for $140 each (the drives are out of stock, so delivery will be delayed, but can be ordered at this very low price). Consider a 5th drive as a spare. It’s a limited time offer, so don’t delay.

This is a terrific deal, total cost: $427 + $640 = $1067 vs the OWC price of $1430 (prices as this blog post was prepared).

BUT do note that OWC has a 90 day DOA guarantee on drives, 48 hour warranty service, 1 year data recovery service, and so buying the Thunderbay 4 from OWC with the drives included yields notable value over a cost-saving DIY approach as per above.
