Reader Comments on 16GB Memory Modules for Mac Pro

Reader Jürgen K writes to say:

First I want to say I like your benchmarks, ideas, test and very professional feedback about the today’s hardware.

If I want to buy anything like the MacBook Pro 2011 like this time, I read your website and I know what I really will get for my money. Thank you so much!

I am from Austria (Europe) and read your site every day. now I hope I can give you a tip, that you don´t know at this time. There are memory modules for the Mac Pro that have 16GB each. 3 X 16gb are 48gb triple channel... that’s great!

Here is the link from the retailer. I have ordered the 2x8gb for MacBook Pro, and my benchmarks are the same like yours.

Thanks for your work and let us wait for the new Mac Pro!

DIGLLOYD: I remember cycling through Austria years ago— lovely. But film quality sure can’t hold a candle to digital photography.

Yes, 16GB modules are coming, ideally with higher density chips (which will be very expensive). In the meantime, modules would have to double up on the number of chips.

I would advise strong caution on memory modules of 16GB size as noted byJürgen K . These are quad-rank modules, and thus have double the usual number of chips on them. Warranty, build quality, reliability all come to mind as to whether such a purchase would be wise.

A new Mac Pro could arrive soon, or might wait until August— hard to say.
