MacBook Pro eSATA with Voyager Q + Mercury Extreme SSD

Last updated May 18, 2010 - Send Feedback

The Voyager Q drive dock is a quad-interface device into which any 2.5" or 3.5" drive may be inserted.

Because it is a “quad interface” device, it uses a bridge board that slows down performance slightly as compared compared with a “straight SATA” device.

Analysis

Here the Sonnet Tempo SATA Pro shows its merit, with clearly superior read speed to the two other cards.

For some reason, the OWC Slim card doesn’t perform nearly as well here as with straight eSATA. Such is life with eSATA: some combinations just work better together.

Write speed is about the same as seen with other fast devices— limited by the ExpressCard/34 slot. The drive itself is capable of ~260MB/sec.
