A big thanks to Other World Computing for loaning MPG the upgraded 2013 Mac Pro! Ditto for B&H Photo for loaning the 6-core Mac Pro. 64GB memory kit for 2013 Mac Pro provided by OWC.

Introduction

Photozoom Pro offers near perfect CPU core scalability, so it is an intriguing test to pit the 12-core 2010 Mac Pro against the 2013 mode.

Version 5 also has GPU support, and it's important to use the optimization function in the PZP preferences dialog. This dropped the run time by about 20% for the 2013 Mac Pro.

The 8-core 2013 Mac Pro beats out the 12 core 2010 model by about 25%. Even the 6-core 3.5 GHz beats that 12-core Mac Pro: this is due to the use of the GPUs.

The 2013 12-core Mac Pro shows the best performance, but given the big cost jump to the D700 GPUs and 12 CPU cores, a ~6% reduction in runtime is a marginal gain as compared to the 8-core 3.3 GHz with D500 GPUs.
